We are coming out of pandemic retreats Real Soon Now (tm), bringing lots and lots of good release news ... meanwhile please all stay well and don't forget to retreat from all the digital things and enjoy the outsides :)

The silence you are hearing here is because we are gathering to prepare for new releases and features on all platforms, tackling some long standing issuses and feature requests. And some of us are currently isolated far out and enjoying an in-person corona-respecting gathering :)

We are less faceless now! Thankfully @accessnow

We are very happy that Marco is is helping us with accessibility issues lately. twitter.com/MarcoZehe/status/1363746572106891268

Last month 32K installs happened through Google Play, another 70K installs from other counting stores plus many uncounted ones from F-Droid and direct apk downloads ... OMG, our servers are choking!1!! Just joking ... there are no Delta chat servers, and there is no spoon :)

e-mail is a nearby-technology with planetary-scale connectivity, in a *socially* decentered way. Hold together by bubblegum and sticks. There is no project in sight that could "replace e-mail" (tm). We suggest to embrace and amend. Yes, it's a mess but it's also fun :)

Each of @heyhey @ProtonMail @TutanotaTeam @SpikeNowHQ come with their own apps *and* servers. By contrast, Delta Chat apps use the e-mail server of *your* choice and have provider-independent e2e-encryption through autocrypt.org

@Delta Chat:

Oh, an interesting take :) twitter.com/Pocketnow/status/1360579013287288838

Cuba just suffered widescale internet outages for a few hours (seems to come back now), and Facebook/WA and other services were unreachable. However, folks could continue to use Delta Chat -- we know from some of our user feedback chats. Resilience does matter. twitter.com/vinifortuna/status/1360299319623057409

FTR @matrixdotorg is friendly competition to us as we have good personal relations with folks there. They propose a new system while we use the largest existing open communication system (email). We work with minimal funding while Matrix uses VC funding. May both succeed! :) twitter.com/heiseonline/status/1358658342118436865

Since end 2020 @Facebook banned linking in FB posts to delta.chat

Delta Chat for iOS is evolving only for one year, compared to 2-3 years Desktop and 4 years of Android developments, originally started by @R10S. End 2019 he migrated his devices to Apple to lead developments ... no surprise iOS is catching up greatly :) delta.chat/en/2021-02-04-ios-is-catching-up

With Delta Chat you can now communicate with Spinach. Beat that, other messengers! :) twitter.com/euronewsgreen/status/1356268135129751557

that was a great gathering! looking forward to times where this will be possible more easily again. twitter.com/delta_chat/status/1356655821942378503

@Delta Chat:

We have a tiny fraction of Signal's or Whatsapp resources, only started many years later and have to deal with many different e-mails server behaviors. Yet we are closing the gaps. How? One reason is that we adopted @rustlang - and here is some genesis: delta.chat/en/2019-05-08-xyiv

yip, #WeKnowNothing is obviously technically not true for Signal. Maybe a nice slogan, though :) twitter.com/hpk42/status/1355780250672705537

@holger x krekel #blm:

Signal's "We know nothing about you" is not correct, technically. A centralized service *always* knows things even if uses e2e-encryption for its users' messages. Moreover, Amazon who runs Signal servers could track all connections to and from Signal servers and derive knowledge. twitter.com/signalapp/status/1354915823501025280

Store operators have a centralization bias. They control app distribution and the OSes running on phones. This controlling mindset lets them want apps with centralized services, running through their clouds and requiring approval for everything. Which can be withdrawn in a wimp. twitter.com/element_hq/status/1355290296947499013

A thread on hackernews about Delta Chat -- nice to see it's quite well-informed. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25893626

How safe it is to use Delta Chat? Nothing has changed about our stance to user data: we don't have it, not even encrypted, and also no traffic data. Nada. Nothing. Nilch. You insist? Please refer to any of the hundreds of thousands of e-mail servers. Cheers to decentralization :) twitter.com/delta_chat/status/1256137319150751744

It is too easy to block central services, not only in Iran (currently happening) but many other countries increasingly attempt to block and succeed in doing so. The problem is real. VPNs help but make things more complex and costly. Centralization has real human-rights costs. twitter.com/Ammir/status/1353715329101422597

deltachat / deltachat-core-rust: Delta Chat Rust Core library, used by Android/iOS/desktop apps and bindings ★235 github.com/deltachat/deltachat-core-rust

This is interesting. Believe it or not, I have a friend that has no smartphone and we communicate exclusively via email. I wonder if this would improve the experience. Chat over e-mail:

We are not the only ones to enjoy having migrated to a "Rust core" architecture :) Here, @1Password has a good writeup on their migration from Go to Rust. serokell.io/blog/rust-in-production-1password

Apart from Google Play where Delta Chat just passed 100K downloads, the Android app is also available on FDroid, as direct apk, and through several national or region-specific stores, like Paskoocheh which just published a promotion video. twitter.com/PasKoocheh/status/1351906126250577920

Bad news: we are unexcusably late on publishing about two completed independent security reviews.

Good news: the few higher risk vulnerabilities found are long fixed.

Lessons learned: having *all* network and *all* crypto code implemented in @rustlang

The key lesson from the #Signal brownout today is that we shouldn't depend on any one platform, particularly those that tend to be centralized.

Have a dencentralized secure messenger on deck, I recommend using and supporting @delta_chat

The maintainers of the popular mailcow e-mail server suite have optimized and tweaked it a little for Delta Chat, great stuff :) mailcow.email/2021/01/14/back-to-the-future-with-delta-chat

Delta Chat is probably the most scalable messenger today.
Even if a billion users migrated to our apps, we would be fine and it wouldn't ruin us. Our Operating Costs hardly increase with more users. A pretty unique strategic economical advantage, isn't it?
